Since joining the Centre for Teaching and Learning in Fall 2023, I have taken on many projects. Some of these have taken me out of my comfort zone and that has felt uncomfortable at times. I am proud of how far I have come in my role. I recognize that I still have much to learn, but I am on my way – no doubt.
Here are some examples of projects I have engaged in and artefacts that I have designed.
Learning and the Brain (Boston 2024).
I attended a learning and the brain conference virtually ( Boston 2024). There was so much to know and so I decided to practice some dual coding. Here is the result:
Presentations:
Navigating minds: I presented to faculty in Summer 2024. The topics of metacognition and encouraging self regulated learners has become something of a passion for me. I had new and seasoned faulty attend and recall that the session(s) went well.
Reflect and Elevate: I presented to faculty with a CTLI peer about peer observation. I was still teaching at this time and she came in to observe my class and I attended her evening math class. I learned about peer observation when I attended the INED 2023 conference in Las Vegas. When I started at the center, we spoke a lot about cultural change and how this reflective observation practice could elevate faculty’s existing work. At this time, we have yet to take this project further but still have intention to do so.
Engagement and Active Learning: Also presented to faculty with metacognition in mind. While there is some overlap with content from the “navigating minds” presentation, I took any chance I could to talk about metacognition.
Enhancing Learning Outcomes: I have presented this to faculty in both BSN and ECCE programs. With the introduction of program review to the college in the past two years, it has become apparent that existing learning outcomes need revision. Along with my director, we took the “tack” of learning outcomes being part of the student journey and to encourage faculty to look at learning outcomes from a bigger perspective than just the course alone. This has been a slow moving project but we are currently gaining traction and I am becoming ever so slightly more confident in my abilities in this area.
