As an educator, I hold firm the basic assumption that all students try their very best and that it is my responsibility to acknowledge and support their efforts. I value a constructivist lens to teaching and learning and apply this through an understanding that students bring lived experience and prior knowledge with them on the learning journey. I work hard to support and develop their confidence to connect this knowledge and experiences with new learning. When students see value in themselves for the knowledge that they have, this develops self-belief and subsequent self-efficacy. Once this happens, the opportunities for more are endless.
I believe that everyone has the right to learn, and that while the journey may be easier for some, the results can be life changing. I try hard to foster continuous growth and development in the students that I work with and strive to focus my teaching to meet students where they are at with information that is relatable and relevant. If I can capture studentsā attention with information that is engaging and thought provoking, then a deeper sense of learning prevails, resulting in motivated and curious students who are keen for more.
I recognize my responsibility as an educator, andĀ I hold students accountable for their part in the learning journey. The phrases āco learning and co teachingā resonate with me. If I acknowledge constructivism as a principle of teaching and learning, then it stands to reason that I can learn from my students and they from me.Ā This interchange of information is empowering for all and removes me from being the āteacherā to more of a facilitator in the classroom. I prefer to think of myself as the conductor of an orchestra (classroom). While the instruments (Students) may be off key from one day to the next, eventually through practice,Ā music (learning) is made.Ā Ā
As a faculty member I work hard to nurture important peer relationships that are of mutual benefit. I respect the knowledge and insight that my peers offer and I consider myself to being open and curious about the differing perspectives that I encounter through the relationships I make.
I am committed to fostering, continuous growth , innovation , and excellence in teaching and learning, while promoting a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and reflective practice among faculty peers.
